Yes, you can rent a vintage Ford Bronco in the Hamptons, but you’ll likely have to go to a peer-to-peer app like DriveShare or a classic car dealer in Manhattan. And before you sign on the dotted line, ask if the Bronco is truly vintage or just looks the part.
DriveShare lists them from private owners. The featured ones start around $300 a day, but they’re not all vintage. Cooper Classics in Manhattan listed a 1975 Bronco for rent as of 2024, but the price was by phone.
But what counts as vintage? It depends who you ask. Turo, a car-sharing app, draws the line at 25 years: a car must be at least that old to be listed as a “classic vehicle” on the site.
Make sure you’ll qualify for the rental in the first place. Even if you can afford the fee, on DriveShare you must be at least 25 years old, have held your current driver’s license two consecutive years, and not have any major violation on your driving record in the last five years.
Insurance
And the other tricky part of renting this old truck is insurance. NY DMV rules say that a peer-to-peer car must be covered by a group policy from the program’s administrator. DriveShare’s policy gives no protection for interior damage, mechanical damage from improper driving, or use in any prohibited activity. The rules have changed, too. A state law signed last December removed the $1.25 million extra liability requirement for peer-to-peer car sharing. The law only requires that the policies be three times the state’s standard minimum liability. The change went into effect June 17, 2026.
If you rent from a company instead, New York has a rental vehicle law which limits your financial risk. You only pay the lower of the reasonable cost to repair the car or its fair market value. They can’t bill you for “lost use” (days the car sat out of service). The catch: the optional damage waiver has no fixed daily price cap on a car with MSRP over $50,000; the most it can charge is the car’s fair market value.
So which one leaves you better protected? It depends on how you book it. A peer-to-peer vintage Bronco runs on the platform’s group policy, exclusions and all, but a Bronco from a rental company falls under the rental law’s limits. Ask which one applies before you sign anything.
The Sand and Surf of East Hampton Town Beaches
While most people think of a vintage Ford Bronco as a vehicle for the road, nothing beats the experience of taking it out on the sand and surf of East Hampton Town beaches. Just make sure you have a valid Town permit, which is renewed every five years, before driving your vehicle onto the beach. And remember that the speed limit on the beach is 15 mph. Parking is a separate hurdle. For the 2026 season, Southampton Town charged non-residents $500 per vehicle for a full-season beach parking permit bought online, and buyers had to show the vehicle’s registration.
Before you take your wheels onto the sand, ask the owner if driving there counts as a prohibited use. DriveShare won’t cover damage from a prohibited use, so get the answer in writing. And the Southampton permit needs the Bronco’s registration papers. Will the owner give you access to them?
Timing matters a lot. You need to think ahead, because the best cars go fast for the nice weekends from late May through September. Memorial Day, Fourth of July, and Labor Day are in big demand. Let the owner know when you’re getting there and leaving to get the keys, because East End traffic is for real. And remember that going for a few days usually makes sense.
Hamptons handoffs come with a lot of moving parts. There are gated driveways, valet rules, event schedules and private properties to keep in mind. It makes the most sense to sort out all the details with the owner beforehand.
A Bronco for the Hamptons weekend isn’t just transport. The car is part of the experience of being there: beach days followed by dinners that turn into late nights; a wedding every weekend. The trip village to village with luggage and friends feels better with a retro ride. Westhampton, Quogue, Hampton Bays, Southampton, Water Mill, East Hampton, Amagansett, Montauk - the South Fork is an itinerary in itself, and then there’s the North Fork too: Riverhead, Southold, Greenport.
The Hamptons is one of the country’s top wedding destinations, and a vintage Bronco makes a perfect arrival car for wedding photos. To make sure it’s in the right place at the right time, coordinate with the planner, venue and photographer well in advance.
Content creators and photographers flock out east for those Hamptons vibes. Big ocean roads, iconic village streets, marinas, estates, wide open stretches: you’ve got it. If you’re working to a call time across several spots, tell the owner up front so the car is where you need it. Book it out for birthdays, anniversaries, proposals, bachelor weekends. Maybe a surprise.
The Hamptons feel right in a vintage Bronco. Plan well and it’ll take you there.
