Renting a Supercar for a 40th Birthday in NYC.

Plan a 40th birthday supercar rental in NYC with tips on choosing a Lamborghini, booking ahead, checking insurance and the deposit, and picking a route.

The 40s marks a new, golden phase in one’s life: midlife crisis, new desires and perhaps a long overdue change of lifestyle. Are you living in New York City and planning a 40th birthday party with your spouse and/or friends in mind? Although bringing your loved ones together is a great idea, how about you up the game by including a Lamborghini Huracan rental in New York? The iconic Lamborghini is an image of luxury, class, and social status, and if there’s one event you should spend your money extravagantly to celebrate, this is it!

It is doable, and in this article we show you how to pull it off. First pick the car, or cars, for the mix of people coming to the event. Book them weeks in advance to ensure you get what you want. Then sort out the insurance and deposit. Finally plan where to drive.

If there are five people in your group, the Lamborghini Urus seats all of you, and has a twin-turbo V8. The Lamborghini Huracan seats two, has a V10 and scissor doors that stop people in their tracks when opened. With 631 horsepower from a 5.2-liter V-10, the Huracan screams to 8,500 rpm, making it a driver’s delight. Don’t miss the start button hidden beneath a red flip cover. For great 40th birthday photos you will love the Lamborghini Huracan Spyder, its roof folds down in 17 seconds. If you’d rather ferry people and bags, the Urus delivers 657 horsepower and does 0-60 in 3.5 seconds with five passengers.

The price varies by model, dates and company. One New York-area company lists the Urus starting at $1,500 a day, the Huracan starting at $1,800 a day and the Spyder starting at $2,000. Another one lists its Huracan at $1,200 a day, so call around. Check for discounts for renting for two or three days, and especially for monthly rentals.

There is a security deposit charged, refundable when the car is returned undamaged and without violations. One place charges $5,000 to $10,000, depending on the car model. They will hold it for 5-7 business days to make sure there’s no damage or violations. As for mileage, another lists 100 miles a day included in the rental.

Car rental places have different rules. One place will rent to you if you are 18 or older; another wants you to be 25 to drive most supercars; it will rent a few other models to drivers 21 to 24, with an underage fee added. Then there are other hoops to jump through: you need a valid U.S. driver’s license, proof of full-coverage insurance that extends to exotic rentals. It’s also very important to know that it is illegal in New York for a company to refuse anyone who is at least 18 years old solely because of their age if insurance coverage for that age is commercially available.

Make sure you show that proof of insurance before you pick up the vehicle. Not all policies cover exotic rentals, so check with your agent ahead of time. If your personal insurance won’t cover exotic car rentals, or if the rental provider isn’t satisfied with the proof you show, ask about supplemental coverage. If you’re purchasing the Lamborghini rental as a surprise gift for a loved one, they will need their own license and insurance in order to drive the vehicle.

New York state residents are in luck. New York auto insurance policies normally cover rental car damage, even without collision coverage on your policy, for short-term rentals of 30 days or less in the U.S. and Canada. (This NY coverage may be rejected if a separate premium is charged.)

New York law allows rental companies to charge a daily price for a damage waiver (DW) without putting a dollar cap on it, only if the car’s sticker price is over $50,000. If you damage the car, you’re billed for the lesser of the repair cost or the vehicle’s market value before the damage. The rental agency cannot charge you for “loss of use” while the car is repaired.

Another issue to think about is that it’s a birthday, and that might involve a drink or two. The law lets the rental agency void the damage waiver if the car is raced, driven recklessly, driven under the influence or driven by someone not listed as a driver. So the guest who drinks rides, and only the named driver drives.

Think Carefully Before Driving It in the City

Once you get your car, consider the city rules first. The default city speed limit is 25 mph unless signs say otherwise. In Manhattan at or below 60th Street the car will cost $9 a day with E-ZPass at peak hours. Better to keep the city part short. Get out of the city and onto the Long Island Expressway toward the Hamptons.

If the 40th birthday wish is the real thrill of speed, consider a supercar track experience at a place like Monticello Motor Club. The included basic insurance carries a $6,000 deductible.

Whatever you choose, reserve your car at least 1-2 weeks ahead for weekdays, and 2-4 weeks for weekends and holidays and special events. Prom season, usually April-June, summer and especially holiday weekends all fill up fast. Car-wise, the Urus tends to book out first.

Yeah, birthdays only happen once a year, but really for you, 40 only happens once. Think hard about how you want it to go. But throwing the keys to a Lamborghini into the party changes everything, and makes your party one they talk about for years.
