Your itinerary

A car for your plans.

A Riverdale pickup, a family occasion near Fordham or an evening on City Island each brings a different set of arrival details. Share the neighborhood and purpose of the trip, then the passenger count and preferred car. A chauffeur inquiry can be discussed separately from a self-drive rental.

If the itinerary continues into Manhattan or Westchester, include the stops and expected return location from the outset. ZOOOMR can review the vehicle request alongside building access and timing. An address-specific plan is more useful than assuming a particular car can be delivered anywhere in the borough at any time.

Can you rent a luxury or exotic car in the Bronx, New York City? Absolutely, provided that you have the right insurance and are old enough according to the rental rules. The other factors are what deposits are required, the number of days minimum for rental over weekends, mileage limits per day and how taxes and tolls in New York City get added to your bill.

On age, some rental companies insist on 24, but New York state law says rental companies cannot refuse to rent to drivers 18 or older just because of age, if insurance for that age is available. The company may still charge you the actual extra insurance cost tied to your age. That’s because the insurance for teenage customers is more costly to the rental agency. Visiting from abroad does not require you to have a New York State driver’s license, as long as you have a valid license from your home country.

For an exotic car, the key to an easy rental is your coverage on an existing vehicle in your name. Expect to need full coverage, with the collision and comprehensive parts in addition to the liability coverage for accidents that damage someone else. If you go with just the liability part, get the upgrade at least 24 hours ahead of the rental date. One exception is if you hold premium car rental protection through an AMEX Centurion or Platinum card, in which case some agencies will waive the full-coverage rule.

The good news is that insurance typically covers rentals as well as your car, especially among the larger nationwide insurers like State Farm, Geico, Progressive, Allstate. If your company is more local, best to call them directly, since some won’t extend coverage to rentals. Make sure to take your policy and proof of driving license with you, to avoid delays in the rental office.

Damage Deposit

These cars start in the range $75,000 to $500,000, so renting them is risky business. That is why some exotic rental firms ask a damage deposit of $1,000 or more. But here’s the catch: state law says a rental company may not take a deposit or advance card charge for damage while you have the car, and cannot collect for damage until cost and liability are agreed or decided. In other words, you only need to put up money for the rental itself, not the damage deposit. And if there is any damage when you return, the company can bill you for it. You can challenge the amount or dispute the cause.

Small things tend to cost big. One agency lists $300 to repair a rim scuffed by a curb. A sidewall cut costs $500. Big dents can run $1,000 or more.

At the New York level, car rental agencies can’t bill you or your insurer for certain things after a crash. The big one is Loss of Use or its “Administrative Fee,” to compensate the rental company for the downtime on their income. You can be billed the repair costs, but not that. And here’s one more: after you get the notice that there was damage, New York law says you (or your insurer) get 72 hours to ask to inspect the car.

A Two-day Minimum at Weekends

New York City has higher demand for rental cars on Fridays through Sundays, so some firms won’t let you rent one for just a day, especially on Friday or Saturday. Many exotic rentals are days only, with a two-day minimum at weekends. Bear in mind that a self-drive rental is completely different from a car service or limousine. For small fleets of luxury cars, one-day rentals at weekends are hard to manage. The agency will have to weigh up the Friday one-day request against a possible two- or three-day renter, so it may push you to take the car for more days, rather than risk the loss. One-day rentals are usually easier Monday to Thursday, while for holiday weekends like Memorial Day, July 4th and New Year’s, you can expect to rent for three days.

Some firms will give you your money back if you cancel two weeks ahead, but keep the 10% deposit they took when you reserved. Even if you return the car early, or don’t use it because of weather, the firm will keep your rental fee.

The Extra Charges You Need to Plan For

Every rental company is a business, so if there is a way to increase the bottom line, it will be worked into the contract. Rental cars in New York are subject to local sales taxes, so keep a reserve for that. Sales tax in New York City is 8.875%. On top of that comes a special 12% tax imposed by the state on short-term car rentals in the commuter area, which includes all of the Bronx.

Each rental day comes with a set mileage allowance, such as 125 miles. For any mileage after that, one firm charges $2.50 to $6.95 per extra mile, depending on the car. Expect to pay for any tolls you incur. If you head into Manhattan at or below 60th Street, remember to prepare for the daily traffic tolls at peak hours. These are not the same as bridge tolls to or from the Bronx. With E-ZPass, the peak congestion toll is $9.

There are a few smaller things to watch out for in the bill. Adding a second driver to the rental contract can cost you as much as $5 a day, the limit set by New York state. One extra line on the bill is the damage waiver. The waiver is optional in New York state. But it can raise the bill considerably. For now, the optional damage waiver on cars above $50,000 MSRP has no dollar cap until 2028.

Like any significant purchase, a high-end or luxury car rental in the Bronx needs attention to detail. Book early and study the information sent to you by email, to spot the extra charges you need to plan for. Confirm that you have insurance and make a copy to take to the agency. Above all, treat the car with great care. The bottom line: exotic cars can offer the ride of a lifetime, as long as you know how to keep the costs within reason.

Questions, answered plainly

Before you book.

Discuss your dates, preferred car and proposed arrangements with your concierge before confirming a booking.

Ask your concierge
Can I request a luxury car for an occasion in the Bronx?

Yes. Share the date, venue address, passenger count and preferred vehicle. Include any arrival or photograph timing, and ask the concierge to confirm the car and proposed arrangements before booking.

Can the inquiry include chauffeur service rather than self-drive?

State your preference when you send the itinerary. Chauffeur and self-drive requests have different practical and contractual requirements, which need to be confirmed for the selected vehicle and occasion.

What if my Bronx trip ends in Westchester or Manhattan?

Send the final address and collection window with the original request. The concierge can discuss a different return location and any applicable arrangements rather than assuming that a one-way plan is included.
