No, they were alive. I'm guessing there were millions of them. They were covering a large tree and blackberry bushes all around the trees. They were everywhere. I've never seen so many in my life.

They swarm when they're getting ready to hibernate for the winter. Warmth? Company? (Who needs company when your hibernating?) Nobody really seems to know why.

(I had an office in Georgetown with a ladybug infestation a few years ago. Every time they turned up the heat, they woke up. Ugh.)

That is absolutely amazing. I haven't seen them swarm like this since I lived in upstate NY. Then they would come and squeeze in between the double paned glass to live there all window. Amazing! I think this is going to be my new desktop!
