Senbazuru |
Tenjin's Last Boat |
Fall in Minoh |
In the mid-1950s, 11-year old Sasaki Sadako developed leukemia as a result of her exposure to radiation as a baby during the atomic bombing of Hiroshima in 1945. Tradition held that if you made a senbazuru (a thousand paper cranes) and made a wish after completing each one, your wish would come true. Sadako set about making the tsuru, wishing for her own recovery. But as she continued, she began to wish instead for world peace. She died when she had made only 644 and her school friends completed the full number and dedicated them to her at her funeral. The story helped inspire the Children's Peace Memorial in Hiroshima and a statue of Sadako in Seattle. Each year on Peace Day (August 6th), thousands of origami tsuru are sent to Hiroshima by chidren all over the world.

This was taken from a bridge during the Tenjin Matsuri, a summer boat parade that happens near Midosuji, Osaka. I like the reflex of the lights in the river. The parade had already almost finished when I took this picture, but I am actually not sure if that was really the last boat.

Perhaps one of the most well known sights of Kyoto, Kiyomizudera temple, usually closes before dawn. This picture was taken during a very special event when they illuminated the whole temple and let people visit until 9pm. The wooden structure depicted here has 13 meters and uses no nails nor bolts, just wood piled over wood.

At the Buddhist Temple you can read your fortune by randomly picking a stick in a container, and then matching the writing on the stick to the symbols on some wood boxes. Inside the matching box you find a piece of paper with your fortune in it. If you have a good fortune you keep it. If you have a bad fortune you tie it on a wooden frame in the temple in order to keep it away from you.

Umeda Night |
Bridge Top |
Sakura |
This is a night view of Umeda, at the heart of Osaka city. The picture was taken very close to the JR station, using a tripod at a platform, stretching long exposure settings. Unfortunately the platform shakes a bit so very long exposure ends up blurring. This was the luckiest shot I got at that spot that night.

Cherry blossom (or Sakura) sightseeing is a major event in Japan around spring. These trees are everywhere, coloring all the country with their pale pink tones. The event typically does not last for much more than a few weeks because soon the rain and stronger winds wash all the blossoms away. This happens in the beginning of April in Osaka, but in different times at different parts of Japan.
