This is the main entrance of the Temple of Edfu (a.k.a. the pylon of the temple), built after the god Horus-Apollo between 237 and 57 BCE, in the Egyptian Greco-Roman period. This temple was the center of several festivals sacred to Horus. It is the second largest temple in Egypt and considered to be the best preserved one. The inscriptions that cover the walls are considered a compendium of Egyptian religious thought, and they also offer information about political history, administration and other topics. In disuse during the Christian era of the Roman Empire, the temple became buried under desert sand to a depth of 12 meters until the 19th century when French Egyptologists came. Since 1986 the German Edfu-Project has been putting much effort into translating and publishing this temple's inscriptions.

Mokattam |
Burj Khalifa |
Mount Fuji 2011 |
Mokattam Mountain is the highest point in Cairo. During the Egypcian Old Kigdom this hill was quarried for limestone to build the Great Pyramids of Giza. This is the mountain that was miraculously moved by Saint Simon in the 10th century according to the Christian Coptic Orthodox myth. Nowadays the mountain is the main garbage dump for Cairo, and it houses most of the people who collect Cairo's trash. The cliff shown in the picture provides a nice view of the city and is a popular dating spot amoung young couples.

Before known as Burj Dubai, the now finished Burj Khalifa is the tallest man-made structure ever built, at 828m, with 160 floors. This building was designed by Skidmore, Owings and Merrill, which also designed numerous other famous skyscrapers. The primary contractor for building this skyscraper was South Korean Samsung (same who helped building Taipei 101 in Taiwan and Petronas Towers in Malaysia, 2nd and 3rd tallest buildings respectively). The tower was renamed to honour UAE president, who supported Dubai during the financial crisis of 2007-2010. Some controversy exists about the labour conditions of the 7500 workers employed at the construction site. This picture is a panorama assembled from three HDR shots taken at the foot of the tower.
Interesting trivia: In 2008, Hervé Le Gallou and an unnamed British man, disguised as engineers, illegally jumped off a balcony a couple of floors below the 160th floor. Their footage can be seen here.

This is Mt Fuji receiving the first rays of sun in the early morning of new year, as seen from the Tokyo Tower. At 3776m this is the highest mountain in Japan, considered to many a symbol of the country.

Great Sphinx of Giza |
Pyramid of Khafre |
Dubai Sunset |
Part of the funerary complex of Khafre in Giza (who reigned Egypt from 2558 to 2532 BCE), this sphinx is the oldest known monumental sculpture, and it is also the largest monolith statue in the world, standing 73.5 metres long, 6 metres wide, and 20.22 m high. The headdress was originally decorated with a sacred serpent. The nose and beard are also missing. Examinations showed that long rods or chisels were used to pry the nose off. The surface is also told to be damaged because it was used for target practice.

The tomb of the fourth-dynasty pharaoh Khafra (who reigned Egypt from 2558 to 2532 BCE), this pyramid rises to a height of 136.4 metres. Ramesses II (who reigned Egypt from 1279 BCE to 1213 BCE) robbed the casing stone from it to build a temple in Heliopolis.

This is just another shot of Kiyomizu-dera that I had in my archive. Heavily post-processed to the point of looking like line drawing. I hope you enjoy.

This is Helena's new camera. Really simple kit, but it produces very high quality images and movies, and fits in a jacket pocket. The Panasonic GF1 is a micro four thirds mirrorless DSLR, so it has a big sensor in a very small package. This kit came with the 20mm f/1.7 prime lens, which gives the equivalent field of view of a 40mm lens if this was a 35mm camera. So far I've been carrying this camera around more than Helena, it is so much lighter than my Canon 7D.

In the end of September we had the pleasure of receiving our dear friend Edson for a dinner at our house. My mom, who is here visiting as well, cooked some nice vegetarian lasagna for us, the three vegans.
