Lanterns @ Gift of Love Home

I volunteer with a group of friends on a semi-regular basis at the Gift of Love Home run by the Missionaries of Charity.

On the second Saturday of every other month, we make lunch for the residents. It's a mad mad rush usually, especially when we decide to also do breakfast. I don't usually take a lot of photos when we make lunch because there's always plenty else that needs to be done.

A couple of weeks ago, we decided to do a little Lantern Festival celebration for the Home. I had the opportunity to take some photos but it was little tricky with the lack of light. :) I had fun anyway, and we hope the residents did too.

I was asked recently to help some friends with a mini-"product shoot" for some beautiful angel ornaments that they were making to raise funds for a Habitat for Humanity project. The first batch of photos were needed in a hurry so I had to come up with a DIY mini home studio real quick. I grabbed a roll of mahjong paper (basically big white sheets of paper) on the way home from work, thinking I could use them as a cheap backdrop. In the end, I just used an A4 sheet of paper propped up against a desk light, and the mahjong paper ended up being a pretty good reflector instead. I wish I had taken some pictures of the setup but it took no more than 10 minutes to setup and even less to tear down.

I think I didn't do too badly for my "first time". A little rough at the edges, but with a little work in Photoshop, the photos turned out okay. At least my friends seem pleased with it.

I dropped by the "angel-workshop" on Saturday and took some more photos. Response has been great for the angels so far and they are selling out fast. Great work guys!

I chanced upon this little ladybird on the grounds of Chateau de Versailles when I was backpacking in France last year. It was taken using a borrowed HP R707 (the trip broke my piggy bank and I didn't have enough to get a new digital camera then). Not the greatest of cameras but sometimes it can surprise you.

One of my favourite pictures from the trip because I had no hope that the camera could actually get the ladybird in focus.

TIE Fighter

When I was in primary school, screenings of Star Wars movies after the exams was a regular feature. It kept us occupied while the teachers were busy with the marking. Over the 6 years, I must have watched Episodes IV, V, VI at least twice each. I have always wondered who that mystery Star Wars-obsessed teacher was, and if he knew that he was grooming the next generation of Star Wars fans.

The Art of Star Wars exhibition made its way to the Singapore Science Centre earlier this year. Unlike most exhibitions, photography was allowed but no flash. I got my picture taken with Darth Vader *lol*, but no, you'll never see it online.
