The Moon as Sun

Long exposure (15 sec) of the moon at night. Unfortunately, I had set the timer too short, and the camera settled on the tripod during the exposure, thus resulting in a somewhat oblong moon.

Snakes on a Drain!

Harvestman preens, but can't reach mites

Snakes on a Drain!

Ahahahahahaha... I kill myself. Anyway, you might be asking, "Where's the rest of the snake?" Little bugger had crawled out of a hole in the brick under the drain pipe and couldn't get back in.

Harvestman preens, but can't reach mites

There's a reason insect preen so much: parasites. The red dots are mites, which can be found on all manner of larger insects.

Large grasshopper, profile

Ladybug larva cleans its feet

Glistening round millipede

Large grasshopper, profile

I could spend hours tracing the intricate patterns and folds of a grasshopper's exoskeleton. Unfortunately, the grasshopper never seems to have the time for me.

Ladybug larva cleans its feet

Most folks will find this surprising, but insects are fastidious groomers. Just watch a fly clean its antennae, wings, and legs.

My dad used to see these in the Smokies.

Ginseng in the wild

Fuzzy pink mushrooms

Pete the wonder mouse

Ginseng in the wild

It had berries, and based on its growth and surroundings, this is probably a 4-year old plant.

Fuzzy pink mushrooms

Should be easy to identify due to the somewhat unique characteristics.

The "wonder" mouse, as in, "I wonder how he survived this long."

Corrugated parasol mushrooms

Insect traffic jam

Large red soldier ant - unidentified

Corrugated parasol mushrooms

No, "corrugated parasol mushroom" is not the correct name, as far as I am aware. But it should be.

Insect traffic jam

Can anyone parse this image for me? I have no idea what is going on, or even how many parties are involved. I see a ladybug larva at the bottom and what might be a metamorphosing larva at right, but the latter might just be an exoskeleton.

Large red soldier ant - unidentified

She was much larger than the average red ant I see around my house, and had a very different build as well. I put her back down a few feet from the front door, but she wandered back to her station within a few minutes.
