Blümlisalp Traverse

Blümlisalp Traverse
A scan from an old slide I took in 1986. If you look closely you can find two pairs of climbers following us on the ridge. I returned to the area this summer: this is the same ridge in profile, and from a more humble location. And so is this, from the opposite side.

Thanks! True colour!
This has been one of my favourite pictures for over 22 years (OMG!) now.

I just noticed the tag and thought wait what?? 1986. I can see why it's a favorite.

Took long enough to get around to scan it:-) Gotta do some more now...

I too can see why it's remained a favorite. What are you using to scan your slides. I have boxes full.

Thanks! I borrowed a friend's Nikon Coolscan 4000 ED (thanks Kristine!). Scanned only this one so far, but am impressed. Slow though (1 by 1, and a scan is about a minute or so). Gotta get back to my boxes...

I now know what slow means: I got about 20/h, for scanning only. Add to that your normal editing (or much more, if they are in bad shape). Faster than I thought at first, and practice (or lower quality scans) will improve upon it.

You ACTUALLY HIKED this???? IN THE SNOW??? WOW!!!! I am a BIG BABY when it comes to snow!

Yes, I did. Unforgettable. If I were fit and current in climbing technique I'd do it again any time.
Anyway, imagine the trail - you can follow it over the ridge (you can just make it out). And there is more ahead (behind me in the pic), this is less than half of it. I'll post some more later.

Wow Peter, it is an incredible shot. The light and blue tone are beatiful. The climbers and the trace they left in the snow are the cherry in the cake! Congrats!

On revisiting I think I left it a bit too blue. Slightly improved version at JPG Magazine.

I am SOOOOO afraid of heights - even this photo makes me woozy!! ; P It's an incredible shot though!

Thanks! Probably not recommended to try this then - between 1000 and 2000ft down, if I remember well:-)

Yeah - I think I'll pass on this - I had trouble tonight my step stool while decorating the tree which is only 9ft. ; P

Peter all the images in your stream are Faves, and lots of them need a much higher rating !

Dialogue

peterderooij

12 months ago:

Thanks! But actually I am quite happy with the way it's going. To me, the most important thing about faves is that it helps me in my editing process: are the ones I like best really the best? (Sometimes I disagree with the community, and will stick to that, and faves are a bit random, but it does help.) And of course, recognition is nice too:-}

okay.. so now you need to update your labels... this one needs a Fav20 and Fav30 (IMHO)! :)

peterderooij

12 months ago:

Nahh, I'm lazy. I'll search for the awards instead (all my fav20's have the Fave20 award).

Wow - looking at the newer photo of the same mountain, there's noticeably less snow now!
I guess that's the price of global warming. Shame though, it's a beautiful mountain & it looks like you captured it amazingly!

Dialogue

peterderooij

Thanks!
Luckily most of the difference in snow levels is due to the angle and position of the newer pictures.

Hey Peter, I'll probably go on big mountains in May. What lenses do you bring on such occasions?

Dialogue

peterderooij

8 months, 1 week ago:

I only took a 28-70mm zoom (35mm slide) for this, and currently, I use a 17-85mm (digital 1.6 crop). For my purposes that's enough (95%+) -- I rarely want longer or wider than that. And weight is a consideration... Finally, on this climb, there were very few places where I'd be able to change lenses.
