Hokianga Overnight

The House

Hokianga Overnight

I spent last night at the west coast home of the Mitts, the family from whom I rent my room in Kerikeri. I stopped at the entrance to Hokianga Harbor on the way, which was spectacular. Mary and Christiana took me on a rainy tramp through the woods to look at an old commune and I managed to get in a quick walk around the ancienct Kauri forests as well. Their place is beautiful and rustic, a peaceful sanctuary in the hills.

Multnomah Falls

Cape Reinga Day Trip

I took a day and drove to the northernmost tip of New Zealand. It was neato to see where the Tasman Sea meets the South Pacific.

Kerikeri Flooding

Somehow, I suspect they'd have closed this bridge by now in the States.

Another round of flooding

Another round of flooding

Right after I first arrived in NZ (26 March 2007), we had a "150 year" rain that caused major flooding throughout Northland. I guess that makes the 200mm of rain in 24 hours we just had a "100 day" rain?

I considered getting Steph a little gift at the shop there, but thought better of it....

Russel Day Trip

Saturday, I did a little loop, driving the long way to Russel and taking the car ferry back. The road to Russel was actually closed, so I had to take the detour, a dirt road through some very pretty countryside.

Levi

Cobham Road House

Kerikeri -vs- Aoeteroa

Levi

We have a new member of the family. His name is Levi and he's a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. He's the most mellow dog I've ever known. And very cute, too!

Cobham Road House

I am renting a room in this house from a nice very Kiwi family. It's quite secluded, with lovely orchards and surprising things like a 30 foot tall cactus!
