According to geomorphology studies Fuvahmulah used to be an atoll with a lagoon inside, thus fishermen sails their ships through the middle of the island right to the centre of the island where today the Kilhi and cultivated land is found. However, perhaps through passage of time the island’s entrance became closed by the sand and coral blocks and the ships were unable to enter the island. This formation then compelled the fishermen to dock their ships far from the island and at the tip of the island reef. When the entrance was completely closed what used to be once the lagoon transformed to fertile lands and a beautiful pond.
The freshwater pond of Fuvahmulah is beyond any doubt one of the central attractions of this island atoll. Located almost at the centre of the island there are two natural lakes in this island. However, the most famous being that of Bandara Kilhi located in Maalegam ward, The Bandaara Kilhi, which stretch across 274 metres (300 yards) which ditches running trough the marsh land that surrounds this lake. The lakes provide abundance of water to irrigate yam fields and other crops nearby this lake
