3000 Years Of Death

3000 Years Of Death

A second photo of the Spanish prehistoric burial site near Almden de la Plata in the Sierra Morena. Taken from the top of a Landrover it shows the site a little clearer. The Chalcolithic Tholus (closest in the photo) contained crouched human inhumations, complete pots, and fine flint blades and arrowheads. The Neolithic Dolmen towards the back of the photos contained no human remains or material from the Neolithic period. It did however contain three silver rings, an amber necklace and a few ceramic loom weights of a later date (possibly Chalcolithic or Bronze Age). It was suggested that when the Dolmen ceased to be used the human remains were removed and a 'decommissioning' offering left as a mark of respect/to placate the ancestors.

HSE Nightmare

A photograph is taken of a Neolithic corridor dolmen in Andalusia, September 2001. Luckily the Health and Safety Executives remit doesn't expand beyond the English channel, cos I'm not sure they would like the photographers vantage point... Cracking

The Tate Modern recently installed a work of art by Doris Salcedo. This took the form of a 548ft crack along the length of the Turbine Hall. Although intriguing in itself, more interesting was watching people examine and explore it http://tinyurl.com/3yw7ca

Now I'm back at uni, and for the first time in a while not wandering from job to job, I've had time to sort through old photos. A few years ago whilst at university I undertook some work experience with the nice people at English Heritage ( http://tinyurl.com/3dzlus ) working with archaeological metals and slag. Whilst being taught to use the scanning electron microscope I practiced on some of the insects who had expired in the confines of the windowless lab.
