Click here for large size. A bit too heavily processed perhaps, but I quite like this slightly abstract shot of the Harem roof in Topkapi Palace.

Click here for large size. I noticed this faded sign painted high upon the front wall of a 1930's semi detached house for the first time a few years ago. The rate of decay seemed to have sped up since I'd seen it last, so I thought I should record this brief snapshot of elation from half a century ago before it eroded for ever. I had to convert to B+W and play about with colours to make the writing legible.

Click here for large size. Masonry recovered during excavations looking for the earlier church of Hagia Sophia. I like the way the melting snow has given this 1700(ish) year old carving the appearance of crying.

Hagia Sophia is under constant repair and restoration. This web of scaffold reaches to the top of the dome. I like the idea that there is something particularly holy about that patch of metal and netting.

Hagia Sophia (constructed 532-537) was the largest Cathedral in the world for nearly a thousand years, and subsequently one of the pre eminent mosques of the Ottoman empire after the conquest of Constantinople in 1453. A place of worship for Emperors and Sultans, it is filled with exquisite mosaics and decoration. What I find more impressive however is this simple masons mark. Hidden over a balcony it provides a direct link to the work of one man 1500 years ago.
