This cove was the royal canoe landing on Pu'uhonua o Hōnaunau and was forbidden to all commoners. Pu'uhonua o Hōnaunau was a place of refuge for defeated warriors, noncombatants (during times of war), and those who violated the kapu (sacred laws).
