This is a reconstruction of a temple on Pu'uhonua o Hōnaunau, which once housed the bones of 23 ali'i (royalty and nobles, the highest class). Pu'uhonua o Hōnaunau was a place of refuge for defeated warriors, noncombatants (during times of war), and those who violated the kapu (sacred laws).
