A Ports of Auckland Ltd. tug boat (either the Waka Kume or the Waipapa) shows off it's abilities to onlookers gathered on Prince's Wharf. Part of the Auckland Anniversary Day celebrations.

The Spirit of New Zealand sets sail with passengers to watch the boat and yaght races on Auckland's Anniversary Day. The Spirit of New Zealand on occassion does cruises but it's primary role is to help kids in Auckland and elsewhere in New Zealand develop useful skills and character traits by introducing them to sailing a vessel such as this.

The William C. Daldy sets off with passengers to watch and participate in the boat and yaght races on Auckland's Anniversary Day.
This tug once consumed 40 tons of coal in a 36 hour battle against gale force winds to prevent a calamity during the construction of the Auckland Harbour Bridge.

On Auckland's Anniversary Weekend, the Royal New Zealand Navy Band entertained crowds by the Viaduct Harbour. They played marches and contemprory music.

Her Majesty's New Zealand Ship Te Mana was open to visitors for two days on Auckland's Anniversary Weekend. Here sailors lower the gangplank in preparation for sail the next day.

The Anzac Frigate HMNZS Te Mana was at Prince's Wharf over Auckland's Anniversary Weekend. The top decks and the bridge were open to the public.

Built in 1999, Te Mana is one of 10 Anzac Class frigates in the navy. It's 118 metres long and does 27+ knots. I was told it can turn full circle in about 30 seconds depending on the weather.

Te Mana is equipped with a 5 inch 54 calibre fully automatic lightweight gun, an eight cell Vertical Launch System which houses NATO Seasparrow Mk 41 air defence missiles a PHALANX Close In Weapon System, two MK 32 Mod 5 Surface Vessel Torpedo Tubes and numerous small arms.

There was heavy cloud cover along the horizon on the 1st of January 2009 - this is when the sun finally showed itself. The photo was taken from Maungawhau Mount Eden (one of the many old volcanoes in the area).
