Train enters Britomart

Train enters Britomart

© & (M) LGD 2009. A train enters the Auckland CBD train station. The station is located under the site of the 1885 train station (which was tucked away behind the post office and random warehouses and other buildings). Some idiotic rule meant that I couldn't use a tripod inside. I used a 1/5 second exposure for this shot.

Train station skylight

© & (M) LGD 2009. The Auckland train station. This skylight is also a water feature above ground level. Rail in Auckland is pretty poor, but bringing the station back into the CBD was a big improvement. Some idiotic rule meant that I couldn't use a tripod inside. I used a 1 second exposure for this shot.

Row of conical skylights

© & (M) LGD 2009. The conical skylights are meant to be representative of the fact the Auckland is built on an active field of 48 (or was it 42?) volcanoes. There are only about a dozen skylights though.

The old Chief Post Office aka New Train Station (morning)

© & (M) LGD 2009. The Chief Post Office was built in 1912. It obscured restricted access to the old train station. The train station moved out of the CBD and was replaced by a bus terminal and then a carpark. In 2003 the CPO was re-opened, but as the entrance to an underground train station.

Civic Theatre facade detail

© & (M) LGD 2009. The Civic was a grand picture theatre, since adapted to stage presentations as well. Built on the site of a rubbish dump, it was considered the finest theatre in the Dominion. It was also home to a fancy cabaret club with erotic dancers. Clip from a 1988 documentary (The building has since been restored to its former opulence.)

Strand Arcade Exterior

© & (M) LGD 2009. The Strand Arcade was built in 1900 and rebuilt in 1910 after a fire. It was Auckland's second shopping arcade. The stairs to the basement can just about be seen at the entrance. It is now home to an Asian food court but was originally New Zealand's largest restaurant at the time.

Looking up at the Sky Tower

© & (M) LGD 2009. I didn't have one of these customary looking up at the Sky Tower photos... It's the 2nd tallest building in the Southern Hemisphere. Indonesia built a taller one in 2006. The mast at the top is home to an FM combiner for 58 antennas - reputedly the largest FM combiner in the world.

Rainy Day on Cross St.

© & (M) LGD 2009. It was a rainy day on the 23rd of September 2009 in Auckland. Still, the ladies in the Boobs on Bikes parade were sporting enough to not disappoint the patient crowds building up along Queen Street.
