Taken by Lance Taylor Located in the constellation Andromeda can be found M31, the famous Andromeda Galaxy. This spectacular object is a spiral galaxy similar to our own Milky Way. At a distance of only 2 million light years, it is one of the closest galaxies to our own. Its enormous diameter of 200,000 light years gives it a visual magnitude of 3.4, making it the brightest galaxy in the sky and the only galaxy visible to the naked eye. It can easily be seen with binoculars, and telescopes will bring out some of the galaxy's detail. Projections indicate that the Andromeda Galaxy is on a collision course with the Milky Way (our own galaxy if you didn't know that), approaching at a speed of about 140 kilometres per second. Impact is predicted in about 3 billion years; the two galaxies will probably merge to form a giant elliptical. www.seds.org/messier/m/m031.html

Published on Nasa SpaceWeather and SPACE.COM - and taken by myself. Also a Sky News Photo Of The Week #43. Forgot about that too. www.skynewsmagazine.com/pow/pow43.html Those that were attempting to watch Perseid meteors on August 12/02 had a bit of a distraction: an aurora lit up the sky which hindered meteor observations. Lance Taylor of Edmonton, Alberta was observing from the Edmonton RASC's Cooking Lake/Blackfoot observing area when this aurora suddenly developed shortly after 1:00am. Lance reports that although the aurora limited the number of meteors that could be seen that night, he still observed 48 Perseids. Lance used a Canon T-70 camera equipped with a 28mm lens set a f2 and took a 30 second exposure using Kodak 200 speed film.

Taken near Nordegg, AB as the moon set behind the Rocky Mountains on July 25, 2005 @ 10:32 AM. Shot with a Canon 20D - Sigma 300mm lens - ISO 100 at 1/25 sec. F/16. I near stopped traffic dead, people thought I was taking a picture of the moon.. when they saw it was just the moon they wen't meh and moved on... leaving it all to myself once again. I enjoy pulling the Bob Sled to the side of the road for shots like this. =) The first exposure of my vacation. Ahhh.. it was a good one! In all I took 2,226 images! More to come, bears, goats, elk, the usual wildlife and glacier shots yah know. I was hoping to get this one shot as well when I got into the mountains, knowing that the moon would me in the right phase to take such a shot.
