THE RAPTURE * The Rapture is a term most commonly used to describe an event in certain systems of Christian eschatology (study of the end of the world) whereby all true Christians are taken from Earth by God into Heaven before other events associated with the end of the world take place * (In the Latin Bible rapere meaning "to catch up," is the translation of the Greek harpazo, 1 Thess. 4:17). The coming of Jesus to take His church out of the world, "like a thief in the night", ie, suddenly, unexpectedly. The belief held by many conservative Christians that Christ will soon appear in the sky and that all of saved individuals, both living and dead, will rise to meet him. Although this belief is supported by some passages from the Christian scriptures (New Testament), it is not shared by many mainline and liberal Christians. * The sudden transporation of all true Christians to heaven, which is supposed to take place around the time of the Second Coming of Christ.
