Crawford Market, Mumbai |
by Donkey in the City |
Crawford Market, a famous market in South Bombay, is named after the first municipal commissioner of Bombay Arthur Crawford. After Independence of India in 1947 the market was named after social reformer, Jyotiba Phule. It remained the main market for vegetables and fruits until 1996 when the market was shifted to Bombay's twin city, New Bombay. It now faces demolition because the authorities want to build a modern building in its place. Activists in Bombay however are putting up a fight to save this heritage structure.
