The first commerical use of punched cards was in the 1890 census, when Herman Hollerith's punched card based counting system tallied the entire United Stated population in six weeks - a job that had previously taken seven years.

Devised by the German navy prior to the start of World war II. Messages enciphered by an Enigma machine could only be deciphered by another Enigma machine. The Polish secret service managed to smuggle an Enigma machine into England. The English cryptoanalysts devided 'Colossus' to crack the enigma code which played the central role in the Allied success against the Nazis.
