You can try it with almost anything. I find bright colors work best, while scary faces can become quite frightening; had a great one of a student, but as I couldn't ask his parent's permission, I didn't post it.
It's quite easy, but not every shot comes out well. But you absolutely need a (D)SLR: use a relatively slow shutter speed, and zoom in or out as you take the picture. Dark forests look more spooky, people pop out of crowds, and taxis seem to charge you!
