Durante la seconda guerra mondiale l'opera che lo ricordava fu rimossa per farne materiale bellico e non ne rimane oggi che il basamento di marmo.
Un'associazione culturale qualche anno fa ha aggiunto una targa, a ricordo dei successivi eventi: la targa è stata divelta dai vandali.
