Se trata de los restos de una ciudad de la ruta que iba de Olisipo (Lisboa) hasta Bracara Augusta (Braga). La ciudad fue ocupada desde época prerromana, como atestiguan muros de adobe anteriores a la llegada de los latinos, hasta le época medieval, en que la decadencia de la ciudad llevó a su abandono.
