El Castelo dos Mouros fue erigido por los musulmanes que pertenecían a la Taifa de Badajoz y que controlaban la desembocadura del Tajo. Cuando los cristianos lo conquistaron lo reformaron un poco, y más adelante cayó en decadencia y fue finalmente abandonado, hasta que la corona portuguesa lo recuperó en el siglo XIX
