Senior Portrait
My niece asked me to do her senior portrait. I had no idea what I was doing, but it doesn't totally suck. Good thing she's pretty. :)

Nice job on the skintone and lighting Celine.

Thanks. I'm pretty inexperienced when it comes to photographing people, and in using any sort of lighting. I'm sure a pro would have done much better, but she couldn't afford one, so she got me. :)

Nice image, sharp subject, soft background.

On my monitor the skin color looks a little too warm. This is a pretty minor thing though. I usually shot raw and sometimes use a WB target to get good skin tones. I usually warm up the image a little bit in camera raw/lightroom.

Thanks, Bryan. I agree on it being too warm. After I sent it off with her and posted it here, it occurred to me I didn't adjust the WB in Lightroom. I really appreciate your feedback.

Really nice, Celine. :) The focus on her eyes is perfect. That is instantly what I'm drawn to. I think if you could have framed it so that the backround had less bright bokeh and more green it would have brought even more emphasis to her face.

Taking portraits is not in my comfort zone as of yet.

Thanks, Kerry. Good suggestion... this was taken in my front yard (her request), and I didn't even think about how bright the bokeh would be. I was focused on the lighting (two of my niece's friends were standing on either side holding lights pointed at her face) and trying to frame it right. I will keep that in mind for next time, should there ever be one.

ok, so I've never done a "real portrait" either so take these comments for what they are worth (maybe about $0.72 in the current economy) ;-)

It's a really sharp image, but that being said I like this sort of portrait to be much softer.

But that's my only complaint, the composition it really good, I really like the use of the tree.

You underestimate yourself, dude. I'd say your opinion is worth at least $0.75. ;)

You have a point about the sharpness... which, to me, is ironic, because I tend to take blurry shots. I've never really messed with soft focus much, but it is a good suggestion. Thanks, Keith.
