Northern Yellow-shafted Flicker
The only brown woodpecker in Virginia, the Northern Yellow-shafted Flicker (Colaptes auratus) is an odd duck among woodpeckers: it migrates and commonly feeds on the ground.
A pair have moved into the area in the last few days. When I first saw them rooting around in the leaves, I thought it was a Brown Thrasher... then a Mourning Dove... then a woodpecker that had lost its mind. (The red chevron on the nape of the neck was what clued me to its true nature.)
This is the male of the pair, whith his big black moustache. No, really! Just take a look.

Deer Hunting: Windshield Oblique
Photos of my 2002 VW Jetta after hitting a deer on 13 November 2006.
Oblique view of the windshield impact. I was looking at the deer as it tried to put its face into the cabin, but it very quickly bounced away and fell dead to the road.
We continued driving straight, our momentum arrested, which probably saved our lives. Had we swerved we would have probably flipped the car in the ditch to either side of the road.
While these photos were taken at the body shop, they are geotagged at the spot of the accident.
