Deer Hunting: Rear Fender Detail

Photos of my 2002 VW Jetta after hitting a deer on 13 November 2006. Detail shot of the upper part of the rear fender panel. The dent up top is the most prominent problem, but there are other scratches and dents all along the leading edge. While these photos were taken at the body shop, they are geotagged at the spot of the accident.

Deer Hunting: Rear Door Footwell Detail

Photos of my 2002 VW Jetta after hitting a deer on 13 November 2006. Detail shot of the corner of the rear door footwell/fender junction. That powdery substance is deer remnants. Ew. While these photos were taken at the body shop, they are geotagged at the spot of the accident.

Deer Hunting: Driver's Side Rear Door

Photos of my 2002 VW Jetta after hitting a deer on 13 November 2006. Detail of the rear door. Scratches are the biggest problem here, but there is some denting at the rear edge of the footwell that may be part of the panel. (The fender is definitely bent.) Also, the side skirt has taken some damage in the rear. While these photos were taken at the body shop, they are geotagged at the spot of the accident.

Panel dents are focused on the hood joint area and pillar, with scratches all along the door at handle-height. While these photos were taken at the body shop, they are geotagged at the spot of the accident.

Deer Hunting: Windshield Oblique

Photos of my 2002 VW Jetta after hitting a deer on 13 November 2006. Oblique view of the windshield impact. I was looking at the deer as it tried to put its face into the cabin, but it very quickly bounced away and fell dead to the road. We continued driving straight, our momentum arrested, which probably saved our lives. Had we swerved we would have probably flipped the car in the ditch to either side of the road. While these photos were taken at the body shop, they are geotagged at the spot of the accident.

Deer Hunting: Front Fender and Door Panel Damage

Photos of my 2002 VW Jetta after hitting a deer on 13 November 2006. This is a detail shot of the hood joint on the driver's side. This is where the main impact took place, with the head and shoulders of the deer hitting the windshield, denting the hood, fender and door panel, and ripping off the driver's side mirror. The side blinker is also gone. I wasn't able to see the light itself in the compartment, so it may have ripped off. There is still deer hair stuck in the hood and fender gap. While these photos were taken at the body shop, they are geotagged at the spot of the accident.

Deer Hunting: Front Fender Detail

Photos of my 2002 VW Jetta after hitting a deer on 13 November 2006. This is a closeup of the front fender, where the initial impact took place. The panel is dented, but the tire well is intact and appears structurally sound. While these photos were taken at the body shop, they are geotagged at the spot of the accident.

Deer Hunting: Overview

Photos of my 2002 VW Jetta after hitting a deer on 13 November 2006. The deer ran into our car from the center median, which sloped up into the road. You can see from the front of the car that it slid across the hood, windshield and side of the car. There was no direct hit. Everyone in the car was fine and walked away with only minor cuts. While these photos were taken at the body shop, they are geotagged at the spot of the accident.

Trees in the morning light along the mile-long W. Duke of Gloucester Street in Williamsburg, VA. Long-time locals have commented that this year's color is the best in memory. I'm inclined to agree.
