- William Henry Harrison is the first example of a trend that has continued nearly unbroken in presidential history. That is, a president who dies in office, no matter how insignificant (Harrison died after 31 days in office) or just plain bad (see Warren Harding) he is, will get a large monument for his gravesite. Personally, I believe this is due to the romanticized idea of “the presidency” in the mind of the American people, so if a president dies suddenly, there is a natural public cry for great mourning and pomp. Harrison was buried in a huge tomb erected near his home in North Bend, Ohio (where, incidentally, his grandson, future president Benjamin Harrison was born). Though its rural location makes it one of the least-visited presidential gravesites, it is certainly among the largest (I have tried without success to find the exact dimensions of the larger presidential gravesites online, but I would like to figure which are the largest, so one of my goals someday when I’m bored is to contact the cemeteries where some of the big ones are and compare sizes…without questions, the largest presidential graves those of Harrison, Abraham Lincoln, Ulysses S Grant, James Garfield, William McKinley, and Warren Harding).
