Zachary Taylor was the second US President to die in office. He ate some bad milk or cherries on a warm summer day in the days before adequate refrigeration and died early in his second year in office. Although his tomb is not quite as grand as some who died in office, it still reflects some of the emotion surrounding the untimely death of a president. He died in July and was temporarily interred at the holding vault at the Congressional Cemetery in Washington, D.C. (the same vault, incidentally, temporarily held the bodies of John Quincy Adams and William Henry Harrison who both died in Washington). In October of 1850, a few months after his death, Taylor’s body was moved to the Zachary Taylor National Cemetery in Louisville, Kentucky, near his home in Louisville. Even then, his body was placed in another temporary vault until the permanent, quite attractive, vault was completed. His final resting place includes a large monument with a statue of him at its top and quotes of his on all sides, a brick walkway with benches, and the mausoleum itself where he and his wife are buried.
