Warren Harding, one of the most inept US Presidents, had the good fortune to die in office; otherwise, he might well have been buried in an obscure spot near his family members in Marion, Ohio. Instead, due to the now oft-mentioned effect of a president dying in office, he has a huge monument, far beyond what he deserved considering he spent much of his presidency drunk, gambling, and womanizing. The Harding Memorial in Marion, Ohio (Harding’s hometown), is one of the largest memorials to any president. I read somewhere (though I cannot for the life of me find the source again) that the original design of the monument called for more pillars or an even larger scale, but when the Teapot Dome Scandal erupted after his death, the initial outpouring of funds dried up quickly and the design had to be reworked. Still, it’s a huge structure for a rather unimportant president.
