September 1975 was not a good month for Ford. On September 5, Lynette Fromme (known by the nickname “Squeaky” and becoming the first female would-be presidential assassin), pointed a gun at Ford when he reached to shake her hand in a crowd in Sacramento, California. She had not loaded the gun properly however and was immediately restrained by the Secret Service. She was sentenced to life in prison and remains there to this day. She was a follower of Charles Manson and said she did it to raise attention to the man-made destruction of earth. Then, less than three weeks later in San Francisco, on September 22, Sara Jane Moore fired a revolver at Ford. However a bystander named Oliver Sipple reacted quickly and grabbed Moore’s arm, so the bullet did not hit Ford. Moore was also sentenced to life in prison. In 1979, she escaped from prison but was recaptured and today serves time at the women’s federal prison in Pleasanton, California. Before her attack on Ford, Moore wrote the following poem: "Hold-Hold, still my hand. Steady my eye, chill my heart, And let my gun sing for the people. Scream their anger, cleanse with their hate, And kill this monster."
Ford had two locations that fought desperately for the honor of housing his presidential library and museum. One was his alma mater, the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. The other was his hometown of Grand Rapids. So, Ford did something that no other president has done, and he put his library (holding all his presidential papers) in Ann Arbor and his museum (documenting his presidency with all the various memorabilia) in Grand Rapids. Upon his death, he was buried in small burial plot at the museum in Grand Rapids. This picture of the plot was taken before his death.
