After viewing several of your photos, I feel there is a lot I can learn from you. Be nice to know how you set your shots up and then edit them. Rick and Kerry are dead on about the contrast and lighting.
It's difficult to say how I set up my shots, I just look for something I like. I guess part of it is that I don't look just for things, or objects but for light and shadow, I like contrasty scenes. Part of my post processing is often enhancing the contrast, not mainly by raising contrast but by burning the shadows and dodging highlights. And in b&w processing also by fine tuning color representation through PS b&w mask.
