The Chief Post Office was built in 1912. It obscured and made difficult to access the old train station. The train station moved out of the CBD and was replaced by a bus terminal and then a carpark. In 2003 the CPO now converted into the entrance to an underground train station was opened.

The Spirit of New Zealand sets sail with passengers to watch the boat and yaght races on Auckland's Anniversary Day. The Spirit of New Zealand on occassion does cruises but it's primary role is to help kids in Auckland and elsewhere in New Zealand develop useful skills and character traits by introducing them to sailing a vessel such as this.

The annual 'Boobs on Bikes' parade is quite popular among Aucklanders, despite the new mayor attempting to prevent it.
I overheard one bloke tell his pommie mate that this was one of our 'cultural events'. Well I suppose it is, although perhaps it would be nicer if it was boobs for boobs' sake as opposed to boobs for porn's sake.

The Dilworth Building in the Auckland CBD housed (supposedly) the secret headquarters for the WWII Solomon Islands campaign.

Bus shelters, rubbish bins, benches, letterboxes, and of course roofs, windows and baloneys were prime locations for a view.

The parade may be called 'Boobs on Bikes' but this lady and others were riding atop vintage tanks. I couldn't get a decent shot of the tanks due to cops and crowds and the fear of being rolled over...

There was heavy cloud cover along the horizon on the 1st of January 2009 - this is when the sun finally showed itself. The photo was taken from Maungawhau Mount Eden (one of the many old volcanoes in the area).

Queen street was full of men, women, and indeed a few (accompanied and unaccompanied) children of all extractions. Mostly men unsurprisingly.

I don't know this band (I presume it's a band) but I liked the poster, especially with the branches crossing over.

The Strand Arcade was built in 1900 and rebuilt in 1910 after a fire. It was Auckland's second shopping arcade.

The Auckland train station. This skylight is also a water feature above ground level. Rail in Auckland is pretty poor, but bringing the station back into the CBD was a big improvement.
Some idiotic rule meant that I couldn't use a tripod inside. I used a 1 second exposure for this shot.

The Civic was a grand picture theatre, since adapted to stage presentations as well. Built on the site of a rubbish dump, it was considered the finest theatre in the Dominion. It was also home to a fancy cabaret club with erotic dancers.
Clip from a 1988 documentary (The building has since been restored to its former opulence.)
