This photograph © "Lctrc-Gtr-Dde" 2005 Two lower-quadrant railway semaphores at the Peradeniya Junction. Multiple signalling systems are used along Sri Lanka's tracks but Semaphores (dating back to the British era) are probably the most common along the Kandy-Colombo line.

Night Market

This photograph © "Lctrc-Gtr-Dde" 2005 A market under some stairs in Kandy. It's probably a 24/7 thing as far as I know. They sell cheap garments and plastic goods.

An intersection in Kandy. I didn't actually realise till I was on my way back to Colombo that Kandy is just the English name for this city. The common Sinhalese name is (Maha) Nuwara. Although Kandy is said to be derived from the Sinhalese word kundhuh meaning hill.

Because I don't own a ND grad filter I had to cheat on this photograph -- two different exposures are photoshoped together - a longer exposer at street level and a shorter one for the hotel.

Commuting and Community

This photograph © "Lctrc-Gtr-Dde" 2005 Not only are the tracks a convinient pedestrian thoroughfare, it also serves as a very central meeting place to have a yarn with your mates in the evenings.

The tracks are not just for trains in Sri Lanka. When in Rome..

Tunnel Vision

This photograph © "Lctrc-Gtr-Dde" 2005 Like most people (it would seem) I used the rail tracks as the thoroughfare between the town centre and my place of stay. I got to enjoy a slight adrenaline buzz whenever I had to walk through a tunnel.

Banana Shop

This photograph © "Lctrc-Gtr-Dde" 2005 Whilst in International English the word 'boutique' has special connotations, in Sri Lankan English the word refers to the Portuguese 'butica' which refers to any type of shop, even this.

Wages by the Kilogram

This photograph © "Lctrc-Gtr-Dde" 2005

The women that pick tea in Sri Lanka tend to be poorly paid. I'm not certain what conditions are like in this field outside Kandy, but the average earnings would be around $60 (US) a month.

The government accepts their living conditions are bad, but it denies the accusation that they have been forgotten.

Tea-picker

This photograph © "Lctrc-Gtr-Dde" 2005 A tea-picker in Sri Lanka. The women that work in the tea-fields are descendants of Indian Tamils who were brought in by the British to work the tea and coffee fields. Many were stateless up until 2003.
