How Low?
"The Shame on Dow" series by Paul Phare continues. This is part of my attempt to raise awareness about the immorality behind Dow Chemical. Today, in Bhopal, India, tens of thousands of people continue to suffer horrible diseases because Dow refuse to clean up a chemical plant that poisoned the city nearly 25 years ago. More info. at www.bhopal.net Many thanks to Paul Phare for granting copyright release to his powerful images, so that they may be disseminated freely to raise awareness.

Well done, John, for raising this issue!

I read a book called "Bhopals will happen" (I can't remember the author off hand) which was a powerful exposé of what led up to the disaster, and how criminally inadequate the company's response was to the ensuing devastation.

Indeed. The sad thing is that my workplace appointed a former senior member of Dow to its governing board, of which I was a member. They thought it a jolly good idea, but I resigned. I'm hoping to do a sponsored bike ride in aid of the Bhopal Medical Appeal next year, and possibly even a photojournalistic book. More work...

That's really putting your money where your mouth is. Kudos to you for doing so.

Sadly, resigning on a matter of principle feels like a relic from a more honest age! Probably because too few of those who should have fallen on their swords recently actually had the integrity to do so! Sigh...

Yes, it probably catalysed my job being pulled a few months later, but if that's the way the world works, well...

200-odd miles of biking doesn't sound too bad, does it? Until you think of the heat.

Well, I cycled from London to Cannes one year. It was great, although once or twice I did wonder why I was doing it! How many miles a day did you have in mind? I found about 60-80 was plenty!

Yes, I think about 50 should be plenty in that heat. I saw some nutters cycling around Iceland last year. Even I would be asking why? after a couple of days there - you can see about four days ahead with their landscape and clear air. Depressing!
