The Elephant Rock is a well known landmark on the Illinois River near Tahlequah, Oklahoma. You can camp near here at Elephant Rock Nature Park. Dianne and I spent a night there last summer in one of their yurts after paddling the river in our kayaks. They shuttle too!

The morning I took these pictures on my way to work, I had hoped for a brillant, red sunrise and lots of mist coming off the water. I have seen it many times on my commute. The weather wasn't going along on this morning and I didn't think the scene was very attractive. I took a small number of shots and left quickly.
When I got home I found the shots very warm and compelling and now the Refuge looks prettier to me everytime I visit.

The Deep Fork National Wildlife Refuge is just outside of my hometown of Okmulgee, Oklahoma. It is a great spot for walking, photography and wildlife viewing. Driving down Hwy 75, many mornings you can see this pond steaming away into the dawn sky. I wonder how many stop and check it out.
