"The old Sargent house on Boston St. in Lynn, Mass - Photographed in October, 1889.
The East-half of this house was build by Nathaniel Sargent (No. 221 in Sargent Genealogy) about the year 1785. The West half of the house is much older, and was built on a different plan. Across the center of each of the main rooms of the West half, was a large oak beam, cased in, and projecting nearly its whole thickness below the ceiling.
John Jenks Sargent (No. 496 Sargent Genealogy) knew when the new part of the house was build, for I have heard him tell the date but I do not remember the year and I have none of his papers.
(signed) Samuel J. Sargent (No. 942)
The tree partly shown in front of the house was planted by John Humphrey Sargent (No. 938) who died in 1855."

Samuel Jenks Sargent was born in this house on May 18, 1833.

Born December (day unknown) 1639 in Charlestown, Massachusetts where his father Rev. William Sargent was a lay preacher in "Mystic Side". John is my earliest ancestor born in America and is buried in Bell Rock Cemetery, Malden, Mass.
The gravestone says: "Here lies the body of Mr. John Sargant aged 76 years & 9 months. Departed this life September the 9th, 1716."
Joseph Sargent (my 7th great-grandfather) is the son of this John and Deborah (Hillier) and is buried nearby. See: www.flickr.com/photos/stevejarrett/95941405/
See aerial photo for context: www.flickr.com/photos/stevejarrett/96002359/. My theory of why John is buried here surrounded by the Green family and not with the other Sargents is that his was one of the first burials in the cemetery (almost certainly the first Sargent buried here) so the cemetery might have initially been quite small. Also, his son Joseph had married into the Green family in 1685 so there was a strong tie with the Greens at the time of John's death in 1716.
