Kevin Acker Leads Canoe Trip Through Algonquin Park, Ontario

Kevin Acker commenced a seven-day canoe trip in Algonquin Park, Ontario, on July 30, 2007. On August 4, 2007, Kevin Acker successfully completed the trip. Kevin Acker was accompanied on this trip by Jason Conaty and Josh Goldstein.

Kevin Acker began his seven-day trip on Canoe Lake, using Portage Store as outfitters. Around 4 p.m. that day, Kevin Acker left for Burnt Island Lake. The 18-foot canoe, fully loaded with three people and their backpacks, was a bit difficult to maneuver.

Kevin Acker’s team had steak that first night, which Kevin Acker’s friend Josh Goldstein bought and Kevin Acker’s other friend on the trip, Jason Conaty, cooked.

On the second day, Kevin Acker and his team traversed Big Trout Lake and Lake LaMuir. Kevin Acker found this to be a trying, 10-hour day. The 2,600-meter portage between Big Trout and LaMuir was particularly difficult. There was only one campsite open on LaMuir, and Kevin Acker’s group barely made camp before dark.

On day three, Kevin Acker enjoyed a moderate day, with about six hours’ travel time. Kevin Acker saw two moose on the way into Catfish Lake, where Kevin Acker’s group was headed. Kevin Acker and team arrived well before dark and enjoyed the lake before dinner. Kevin Acker ’s covered hammock handled that night’s rain without a problem, and Kevin Acker found the hammock much more comfortable than sleeping on the ground.

On day four, Kevin Acker’s team set out for Burntroot by way of the Petawawa River. Kevin Acker’s team had to paddle past Burntroot Lake, one of the loveliest lakes in Algonquin Park, because the all of the campsites were full. Then, Kevin Acker moved on to Redpine Bay.

The fifth day, Kevin Acker and team traveled from Redpine Bay to Big Trout Lake. Finally, they were able to relax, but experienced a great sense of isolation at this site, as there were no other canoeists around.

Sunbeam Lake was the destination for the second-to-last night of the trip. Though small and potentially quite crowded due to its easy access from the Canoe Lake put-in, Sunbeam is one of the nicest lakes in the park. The prime campsites were taken, so Kevin Acker’s group settled into a campsite on a hill.

Finally, on day seven, Kevin Acker’s team headed back to Canoe Lake by way of Tom Thompson and Joe Lakes, both of which were quite crowded. Overall, a very difficult trip for Kevin Acker, and looking back, a bit too ambitious for three people in a slow-moving. fully loaded canoe.
