Topic: Bug list / Feature List

wrote Posted 2 years ago
I'll try to update this message regularly. Only I can edit this main message. Note that some of the enhancements may be restricted to Pro accounts only when implemented. This list is by no means exhaustive. We have a much larger internal bug tracking system but at least it gives you guys an idea of some of the things we are working on.

#1 priority right now is to get SmartSets back up online.

Features to be implemented

1. SmartSets

1b. Page SmartSets

2. Recent Activity

3. Favorite pools

4. Photo pools for groups

5. Zooomr Analytics (including trackbacks)

6. Group Search

7. Promote other admins in groups

8. Account page allowing settings for large sized photos, change user name, password, delete account, profile description, avatar, etc.

9. Enable invitations to invite to group as well as invite to your photostream as friend via email.

10. Develop a way to flag offensive images and have an opt in filter for people to select to apply to their viewing experience.

Bugs

1. Search photos does not currently filter by you or contacts.

2. Rotate Image Render Bugs.

3. Fix various uploading bugs to ensure greater stability in terms of EXIF IPTC data including geotags.

4. After posting to a group thread Zooomr doesn't return you to the end of that thread and your post.

5. Group members needs to page to show all members in a group.

Enhancements

1. Create better reply threading in Zipline.

2. Page Zipline.

3. Open API. Flickr to Zooomr importer.

4. Allow user permissions for tagging, peopletagging, etc.

Part 1:
After hours of testing (literally) I managed to identify a set of EXIF metadata fields which prevent the Camera and Colorspace Information to show up after upload. Byte order is not influencing this behaviour as far as I know. Here is the list of all data fields I identified:

Part 2:

  • EXIF:MaxApertureValue
    EXIF:FocalLength
    EXIF:ExifImageWidth
    EXIF:ExifImageHeight
    EXIF:InteropIndex
    EXIF:InteropVersion
    EXIF:FileSource
    EXIF:FocalPlaneXResolution
    EXIF:FocalPlaneYResolution
    EXIF:GPSVersionID
    EXIF:GPSLatitudeRef
    EXIF:GPSLatitude
    EXIF:GPSLongitudeRef
    EXIF:GPSLongitude
    EXIF:GPSAltitudeRef
    EXIF:GPSAltitude
    EXIF:GPSMeasureMode
    EXIF:GPSMapDatum

Part 3:

It's especially annoying that GPS information is disabling camera information processing although GPS data is processed correctly. So you have to choose which is of more importance to you.
The cameras mentioned earlier in this thread (e. g. D70) do have EXIF:FocalLength data in their photos which gets processed. I don't have any explanation for this yet. So there might be a way to include these information, too. Any ideas are welcome.
wrote Posted on Oct. 16, 2007 (permalink)
Part 4:

A proof of concept can be found here. I deleted all aforementioned metadata fields and added GPS information as a "geo:loc=" Zooomr label after uploading (see any Geo Location for syntax example and don't forget the double qoutes & the space between the coordinates).

EXIF is a sore spot on Zooomr :/

People Tag - I don't want to retype people over and over.
Let's say I put a non zooomr person on a picture, next time I wanna add a people tag I will have an history list I could chose from (Without resending email to him).

You can take even further, this list can be part of my contact list (Those who are not zooomr users will have a name and email address only) which I will be able to put as a people tag and invite them on demend to view new pictures.

Not sure if this bug has already been mentioned, and I didn't see it in the main list. A lot of my old photos are now very small in size. They were probably 1600x1200 when I originally uploaded them. When I go to make a portal, I see a larger version, so I am sure the big photo still exists, but it does not show up on the regular page.

Ex: http://www.zooomr.com/photos/mccloskey/233406/

Also, portals are not working for me. I can select the photo, but it does not show up in the portal.

Thanks

McCloskey, I'm afraid that falls under Critical Bug #4, "Photos that were damaged or lost during the 'upgrade' to Mark 3 have not been recovered, despite promises to the contrary made months ago."

Unfortunately, I have absolutely no good news for you regarding the issue. It was acknowledge by Kristopher right after the "upgrade" four months ago when he promised to restore the damaged photos from backups, but nothing has been done since.

James, thanks for the update. I haven't been keeping up as I should. After I posted I saw someone mention it earlier in this thread too. I guess I need to start some re-uploading...

As long as zooomr isn't useable I switched to 23hq.com - maybe the better site WITH exif and geotagging support.
wrote Posted on Oct. 17, 2007 (permalink)
I've only been attempting to "use" this site for a few weeks & am SO GLAD I didn't fork out for the PRO membership I was originally planning to.
My sympathies go out to all those who've suffered long term & subsidised Kristopher's plaything.
When you've also finally had enough here I suggested you pop over to smugmug.com .
All the good features repeatedly promised here (yet on smugmug.com they actually work) without all the bugs & timewasting nonsense constantly seen on zooomr.

Hi,

I don't know if this is a bug or only a problem with my account:

Once i get signing in i can't see my own photos. I.e http://es.zooomr.com/photos/prattriatlo/3530053/ is accessible if i don't get authenticated, but if i sing in with my user, i get an unreachable web.

Could you tell me what is wrong?

Thanks a lot

I've posted this on another thread in Help already but... I can't access my smartsets anymore. The connection times out when I click on "sets" and I get a "Zero Size Reply". This has been going for several weeks now, since other people obviously can use their smart sets properly, something might be broken only with my account (or my language - german).

Although I'm quite a long time user on Zooomr, I totally understand that people start leaving for other (paid) services. Strikes me that Zooomr was best before MKIII. Please take it to that level again.

Don't hold your breath. There has been a general lack of "reply or action" around here for about four months.

If you have no content left in your account, why can't you... just leave? And not bother with it? Is it really that impossible to just ignore this place if you really despise it that badly?

Those are good reasons, thank you for clarifying.
I was about to suggest that you change you e-mail to something absolutely invalid (noemail@fake.tld), then I realized how possible that will be to do as well...

Leave a Zmail and perhaps an e-mail for Thomas/Kris :/.

Totally agree with James' list and Tom's basic enhancement lists.

I'd like to add to Jame's observations on #7. I can't create smartsets in IE but can do this in Firefox. Is this an IE bug only?
wrote Posted on Oct. 21, 2007 (permalink)
Tell me about it.

Maybe I should just spam the shit out of this place until I get banned.

My suggestions to get some action from Thomas or Kris:

1. Show up at a Photowalking meeting. If you don't live in the Bay Area, fly here!

2. Become one of Kris' contacts. Post shots of male genitalia, preferably with some kind of jewelry or piercings on it, in your stream.

3. Become friends with Persnicketydame and post your messages to Thomas in her photo stream.

4. Talk about Zooomr over at Flickr. Thomas always does, why can't you?

Good luck!

I wonder if Thomas or Kris are actually reading this thread? The last comment I saw from Thomas was over a month ago on Sept 7.
wrote Posted on Oct. 21, 2007 (permalink)
Jeff, I don't think that Kristopher reads any of the help threads here. The last reply that I saw from him was months ago in a social off-topic thread.

Thomas, on the other hand, seems to read and respond to only specific help threads. He recently responded to one within the last week, but didn't bother to respond to any of the others around it.

Fetching, regarding your suggestion #2, please don't intentionally make Zooomr any worse of a place than it already is. More than likely, it won't work, but it will certainly offend most, if not all, of the members of this community.

How about search by camera? :)
wrote Posted on Oct. 22, 2007 (permalink)
Technically, we could if Zooomr was able to import EXIF data from all cameras. If it did, the camera model would be part of the photo's EXIF data and therefore would be added as to a tag to the photo in the form of "camera:model=model number".

Like: "camera:model=EOS-1D Mark II N" ?

I do read it from time to time. But there is not a lot of things that I'm able to do. I don't have any technical skills to code on the site and many of the problems reported are temporary.

wrote Posted on Oct. 22, 2007 (permalink)
For instance. Some people claim that they can't access certain areas of the site or uploading's not working right or whatever. Which is probably true. But usually it's temporary and is a limitation due to server issues. Kristopher and I talk about these issues and agree that we need more servers and are working on that. But most of the issues are not verifiable, repeatable, issues. So to respond to each one with "huh?" not sure why that is happening but try again isn't that satisfying.

Bearded Gift, you can't delete accounts on Zooomr right now. I understand that this is important to you but it can't be done. Kristopher will address this when he can. We have a single developer who prioritizes on things that he thinks will be the most positive for the site and the community it supports. Deleting accounts is important. But consider for a second that there are many, many individuals on the site who do not want to delete their account and who this is not very important to.

wrote Posted on Oct. 22, 2007 (permalink)
It's important, yes, but is it more important to the Zooomr community than say an Open API. I just don't know that it is.

EXIF is a sore spot on Zooomr :/

Yep it is. And it's on the board as something that we know about and hope to have improved in the future. Again, more a matter of where it sits in the development priority queue than anything.

wrote Posted on Oct. 22, 2007 (permalink)
Part of the problem with running a site with a single developer is that many different users on the site will have different priorities. For some, it will be putting a recent activity system into place. For others it will be getting SmartSets back online. Still for others it will be getting their EXIF data to show correctly or to be able to delete their account.

The problem is that you can't please everybody all of the time. Kristopher sleeps very very little and codes well into the night on the site. Neither he nor I take a salary from the site and it has been a net *negative* for us economically. We work on it because we believe that a better photosharing solution can and will be created.

There are lots of IE bugs in Zooomr. My recommendation is that you consider using Firefox with Zooomr and not IE. It works much better.
wrote Posted on Oct. 22, 2007 (permalink)
Thomas - Thanks for responding, at least we know someone is paying attention. Since EXIF is not functioning correctly, it should not be crossed off in the list. Can you fix that? Also, what about the new limitation on post length? Can you comment on why that was implemented? It's really annoying.
Part of what I think gets to people is that we see new features added that no one requested instead of bugs fixed. And nothing that gives us any hope that the bugs are even being worked on. While I think Social Stream and Zipfox are cool, they are far less cool than basic functionality. Keeping this short out of necessity.

Gary, I can't cross anything or uncross anything off the list because there is a bug that is preventing me from editing the original post. I believe that it may be related to the limitation on post length.
wrote Posted on Oct. 22, 2007 (permalink)
The post length limitation is not by design. We are looking into how to fix it.

Kris will be spending significant time devoting Nov. to cleaning up bugs. Some of what he's fixed thus far, SmartSets, Social Stream, etc. very much have been the *most* requested bugs/features by users. Probably the number one request we've had has been to bring recent activity back which SocialStream directly addresses. Far more requests for this than for EXIF data fixes.
wrote Posted on Oct. 22, 2007 (permalink)
Thanks again. That's very encouraging. Social Stream does rock. It actually is a pretty creative way of rolling up a bunch of stuff into a cool interface. I was all set to be mad it got done when bugs didn't, but I was incredibly impressed by it. It pretty much takes care of recent activity.
wrote Posted on Oct. 22, 2007 (permalink)

yep, and I'm going to cross it out on this bug list / feature list as soon as we can work out the bug that's preventing me from editing this original post ;)

JFC! I know that I can't delete my account, but surely you or Kris can...
manually...
just like how we have to delete our pics.

I cannot.
wrote Posted on Oct. 23, 2007 (permalink)
Thanks for this detailed response Thomas.
I think for me, the biggest "unhappiness" came from the lack of communication and it was now so good to hear some things from behind the curtains! :) So if you or Kris could write (blog or post) once a week about the current development (and plans), you could calm quite some of our hearts! =)
