Topic: Lightroom Zooomr Export

wrote Posted 1 year, 9 months ago
Hey,

So I just found out about the Lightroom SDK, and I'm thinking of making my own "Enhanced Export" to allow for the use of ImageMagick to perform some post processing (see http://www.timothyarmes.com/lrmogrify.php?sec=main for a completed product). In addition, I thought it could be neat to have it automatically upload the exported images to Zooomr, there is similar functionality with Flickr already in an example plugin. I'll teach myself Lua easily enough, but I'm not sure how easy, or possible it would be to integrate this with Zooomr. I'd appreciate any comments, and I'll also consider bugging Kris...but not until he finishes getting the new release done :D.

That would be great of you could build a Lightroom to Zooomr upload utility!! Let us know how your progress goes once the SDK is released. I'll volunteer to be a Beta tester if you need one.

The SDK is released...at least...I think it is? I found some example code (it's all done in Lua), and as I mentioned above, I found another plugin to do ImageMagick stuff. I think the SDK is just an API reference that explains how to write your own stuff, there's no special environment or anything.

My main motivation is to get the ImageMagick functionality like Tim Armes' plugin does (see above link), but also to teach myself Lua (I'm an Electrical Engineer, coding is fun :p). While drafting up some goals for this project, it occurred to me that adding in a direct Zooomr Export would both differentiate this project from Tim Armes', as well as provide what seems would be a useful service for the Zooomr community.

At this moment it's all very, very, very rough ideas, and I have no idea how long it'll take me to get anything usable. I'm probably going to focus on ImageMagick functionality first, since I know that can be done. Zooomr functionality will be completed...sometime...maybe...assuming it's possible. I have a distinct feeling I will need to talk with Kris to go anywhere far with that, and that's probably not happening until after he gets everything smoothed out for the new release. I will be happy to share any work I do with everyone here, I'll probably wind up GPLing it or something like that, assuming I ever get anything working... :p

Yes, I believe you are correct, an SDK was released, I think, but last I heard is that Kris had not opened the API yet. So you can write the software, but not interface it with Zooomr servers yet. I'm assuming he will open this up after Mk4 is released, whenever that ends up happening. My only concern it that the API might change with Mk4 and you will have to rewrite your code to match. (Things seem to function and change loosy goosy like that at Zooomr.)

I use Photoshop and Lightroom to do all of my photo editing, cataloging and keywording, so my main interest is a Lightroom export plug-in with all of the necessary sliders for size, compression, file format, color space, and EXIF/IPTC fields for keyword field, description field, Geotag info., etc. that would be required to upload and label my images to my Zooomr account. I'd be happy to put together a list of the functionality that I feel would be useful for an export plugin. P.S. I am a Mechanical Engineer, among other things. I like designing systems, by don't have the programming background or experience to but something like this together. I'll have to live vicariously through you ;-)

Haha, engineer photos unite! Technically, I'm still a student, but I'm graduating in May, so I'm hoping I'll have some free time...

As of now, I think I understand how to work the Lightroom SDK. Right now I'm making a basic GUI, and hopefully over the next week figuring out how to pass commands from the GUI to ImageMagick. As you said, Kris has yet to release a Zooomr API yet, but that's ok, I expect him to work on that after Mk4 is released as well. If he doesn't, we'll just have to zmail/zipline him :). I've got enough work before than anyways.

I think the big goal of my project will be to add proper sharpening (not the input sharpening currently in Lightroom), Watermarking, and Zooomr Exporting all in one plugin. Basically, fix some of Lightroom's shortcomings and eventually make it integrate directly with Zooomr! It's all going to be modular so it should be easy to mix and match for a few different ways of making it work.

I think things like EXIF/IPTC fields are easier done in Lightroom proper (under the Library tab). I'm not sure exactly how easy it'd be to access that data in a plugin, though I'm sure it's possible. Low priority for now, since you can do all of it in Lightroom already anyways.

I'm thinking/hoping that the API is supposed to coincide with MkIV.

So I'm making good progress, though this week is a bit of a killer, finishing up my senior project before spring break starts Friday evening...

Kris is set to announce the release date early tomorrow morning (EST), hopefully we'll get some information regarding an API then as well. If not, I'll at least know when I can start bugging him personally for API information :).

At this point, I think once I got Zooomr API information it'd take me about a week, depending on class load, to get something usable. More time to get something fancy looking and "idiot-proofed" but that's what beta testing is for...

woloi I'll bet signing up for the Zooomr Dev Google Group would be beneficial once the API is released http://groups.google.com/group/zooomr-dev

Why has this grown sooooo old? Was I missing something? I would like to use Lightroom on my Windows Home Server and have it upload my pictures from there.
