Looking forward to shooting the eclipse tonight. If I can make it up out of bed.
wrote Posted on Aug. 27, 2007 (permalink)
yeah man, should be fun! I think it starts at 6pm here in Japan!
wrote Posted on Aug. 27, 2007 (permalink)
I'm going to try to get out to shoot it. The time is going to be a bit of a problem though...
wrote Posted on Aug. 27, 2007 (permalink)
Yeah Matt -- that should be awesome to see your photos!

does anyone know where the moon will be positioned in SF during the time of the eclipse? East/West?
wrote Posted on Aug. 27, 2007 (permalink)
I'm assuming it will be positioned to the west of the city. But I'm not entirely sure.
wrote Posted on Aug. 27, 2007 (permalink)
I'm wondering if it will be above the city or the Golden Gate Bridge. It might be an interesting view from up near the Lawrence Hall of Science if it's above the Golden Gate Bridge.

Still not sure I want to crawl out of bed at 2am in the morning to go shoot it or not. But if it was a low hanging moon over the Golden Gate bridge at night it might be worth it.

I was planning on going up to the Lawrence Hall of Science, but It's almost too much to do in the middle of the night. I'm going to try to find a link explaining where it will be exactly.
wrote Posted on Aug. 27, 2007 (permalink)
Matt, that would be cool to see.

There's a very thin window during total eclipse and sunrise. During that time, I plan to be asleep.

Does anyone know when (if) it will occur in Israel?

According to this site http://www.timeanddate.com/, It looks like
Aug 27, 2007 -
Moonrise 7:34 PM 105°Map direction East by south
Moonset 5:36 AM (Tuesday)250°Map direction West-southwest

So to get a picture of the moon near the bridge, you'd need to be along a back-azimuth line of (250 - 180)= 70 degrees from the bridge.

Google maps points to. . .the water. The southeast tip of Angel Island State Park looks to be close to the line, but at ~2 miles a way, it may be too far.

Best of luck to all of you. Look forward to the results.

I am considering it. If I am reading that right, it suggests that the moon will be almost straight up in the sky at totality? Is that correct?
wrote Posted on Aug. 27, 2007 (permalink)
Cool info TravelingRoths -- very exact info! Hopefully everyone gets to see this one!

I've decided that I'm going to go out tonight to shoot. However I'm debating where. My current ideas are Treasure Island, Berkeley Pier or Lawrence Hall of Science. Which one do you guys think will work best?
wrote Posted on Aug. 27, 2007 (permalink)
I was thinking Berkeley pier might be a good spot depending on the fog situation
wrote Posted on Aug. 27, 2007 (permalink)
That's great TravelingRoths. I have no idea how you figured that out. I'm thinking that the Lawrence Hall of Science with a telephoto might work to get a red moon over the GG Bridge. I may be totally wrong though. I'd hate to get out of bed and drive all the way up there if I can't get it.
wrote Posted on Aug. 27, 2007 (permalink)
Another idea could be to shoot the moon over the City from Treasure Island. I'm just not sure exactly where that crazy moon is going to be at 3am though. Might just have to try and scope it out myself then if I can make it up awake.
wrote Posted on Aug. 27, 2007 (permalink)
It's pretty simple, really. If you want to shoot the moon over something specific, draw a line from the object at 70 degrees, and when you stand on that line and face 70+180 (250) degrees, the moon and the object will be straight ahead. Bear in mind this is at moonSET, where the moon will be close to the horizon, and ground-based objects. During the eclipse, the moon will be much higher over the horizon.

Got a boat?

Any advice from the "Pros" for shooting the moon? Settings, etc. I've had a difficult time getting a clear shot on full moon nights w/o either over saturation or "rings". Tips, hints, tricks! Thanks.

@Kosta, Sorry. This will only be viewed by the western Americas through the Eastern Asian/Pacific Islands/Aussie-NZ areas.

On that note, since I'm in that area, I'm getting up to shoot it. I'll even try to get my 7 year old daughter up to see it too.

w00t! Geekdom passed down!

I'm planning on shooting, if the North Bay fog doesn't roll in. I may have to drive inland to get a good shot. We'll see.
wrote Posted on Aug. 27, 2007 (permalink)
Anyone in LA or Southern California going out to shoot it? Any ideas where?
wrote Posted on Aug. 27, 2007 (permalink)
@Nathanus, I'm heading out. From what I've read, if you want to shoot any more than when it's completely eclipsed, you'll want to make sure that you can shoot the horizon. So, get out of the city if you can. Or at least head to the beach, or get up high. Maybe Mulholland or near Dodger Stadium.
wrote Posted on Aug. 28, 2007 (permalink)
@Roths, thanks for the tip, i was actually wondering how to go about getting an alternate subject in my shot...

time to get creative, people...

@Kristopher: it'll be really interesting to see shots from around the world, especially if you get anything in Japan!

The Berkeley pier looks easy enough to get to, so I'll go there if I'm awake. (I'm a newbie to the area, I don't know about wandering around UCB at night).
wrote Posted on Aug. 28, 2007 (permalink)
For the folks in LA, if you want a spot away from the city lights, there's a place in Rancho Palos Verdes. http://tinyurl.com/yvks7v
(The route is from the Santa Monica Pier, since y'all should be familiar with where that is.) Turn right into that little parking lot, but be careful at night since it's hard to see the entrance if you're not familiar with the area.

According to Starry Night, in San Francisco it will enter totality at about 2:50 am and stay in totality until about 4:20. When it enters totality it will be at an altitude of 36 degrees and an azimuth of 211 degrees (roughly south-southwest). When it exits totality it will be at an altitude of 24 degrees and an azimuth of 233 degrees (a little east of southwest).

As TravelingRoths said, Angel Island would be your best bet if you want to stay on land. But even then the moon might be too high.

The Bay Bridge would be easier.

As for me, I think I'll be going somewhere in Sacramento, but I haven't yet decided exactly where.

Anyone want to meet up at either Berkeley Pier or Treasure Island tonight?
wrote Posted on Aug. 28, 2007 (permalink)
I might do Treasure Island. I'm still debating on whether I'll actually be able to wake up and shoot this moon.

I might just wake up, go up on my roof and shoot it from there. Or I might go to Treasure Island, or I'm also thinking that the observation patio at the Lawrence Hall of Science in the Berkeley Hills might be far enough away from the GG Bridge and City to still get them in the shot, even if in the distance if the moon is too high in the sky to put it in a Cityscape.

Or I might just sleep through the whole thing. Still kind of seeing how I feel.

maybe I'll have another glass of wine and then decide. :)

Chabot Space and Science Center will be watching it. I once heard that there was a way to hook a camera up to their telescope up there. I doubt you'll be able to do that tonight though.

LOL the desire to wake up at 2am decreases exponentially with each glass of wine.

hmmmm.. good point. maybe I'll make this one my last one.

And I'm still awake. There's no way I am getting up at 2. Looking forward to seeing all the shots of the eclipse.

I'm still awake, and had to do a couple of test shots to make sure I was ready. Here's the before shot: http://www.zooomr.com/photos/5406@Z01/3062042/

I'm still awake over here -- it's 2:34p here in Japan...

Oh you Pacific Time Zone peoples.....

Dense cloud and rain In auckland, NZ so I'm relying on you guys to get some good pix.
wrote Posted on Aug. 28, 2007 (permalink)
So I set my alarm to get up now to shoot it at the exact eclipse but now realize that at the exact eclipse there is nothing to see. You can barely see the moon at all. It's almost pure darkness. Will have to get back up in an hour when it's ending and all red like. Right now it's just a faint bit of dust in the sky, almost entirely black and unphotographable really.

nothing from phoenix. i got attacked by moths and yelled at by truckers. miserable.
wrote Posted on Aug. 28, 2007 (permalink)
my point and shoot can't get good pics when the moon is too dark (like right now). I uploaded some pre-totality pics, but they came out fuzzy.
wrote Posted on Aug. 28, 2007 (permalink)
I got up early, got some shots of it going into eclipse, but now the fog is coming in. ARGH! Off to bed, uploading tomorrow after coffee.
wrote Posted on Aug. 28, 2007 (permalink)
I really should have gotten a telescope attachment to fight the fuzziness. Here in Marin County, just north of San Francisco, it's perfect sky.
wrote Posted on Aug. 28, 2007 (permalink)
I just posted a few pictures taken during the initial partial eclipse. Not the clearest pics, but they should tide folks over until Thomas and Matt get their stuff up. :)

well. I woke up at 3:00 a.m. to shoot it. And it was gone, in eclipse mode, played around on Zooomr a little bit, checked again, still nothing and then decided to take a little cat nap until about 4:20 or so.

Now this is where it gets weird. I could have swore that I woke up. And actually watched the final black eclipse run off the moon. Like a sun setting on the ocean where you can actually see it. I almost swear I was awake and saw that. And then there were clouds against it. I'd I was saying to myself, these blues are unreal. They are almost too blue. Photos would look photoshopped almost that wayyyy too blue with bright white clouds.

But, I was so zoned out that there is a possibility that this could have been real or a possibility that it could have been a dream. It's hard for me to tell still.

I did have another really kind of freaky dream about the same time about me sneaking up a stairwell with my camera to take wide angle shots of it and then realizing that the stairwell lead up to airplane runway. Now to make it up from the top of the stairwell to the runway I had to pull myself up and for whatever reason I did not have the strength. And I was getting really angry because I wanted to shoot the planes directly from the runway with my camera. I could lay right on it and shoot them as they took off.

So I finally realized why I couldn't find the strength to pull myself up on the runway. It was because I was dreaming. So once I realized it was a dream I just transported myself there. Because, well, it's a dream.

So that dream is kind of mixed in with my visions of the moon which I think might actually be real.

Whatever the case, I missed all the red goodness but did snap a few regular moon shots this morning from the balcony outside my bedroom.

I got a couple uploaded, not as clear as Randyman's, but watching the eclipse was incredible. Glad I got up to see it.
